As it is, I came to a screeching halt after reading "replies ich dieses". Of course, as a rule there's no point in trying to fit the syntax of a quoted language to the quoting one, or vice versa. But here, an additional "that" would be dulcifluous and free of charge.

Then, the use of "anfractuously" where Goethe wrote the everyday umständlich. A cardinal character of Goethe's prose and poetry is that he doesn't pile it on, neither with vocabulary, nor syntax, nor sentence-length. I have nothing against "anfractuously" in general, in Texas we use it all the time. But if things like that were allowed to accumulate, it might make folks think Goethe was a German William Buckley.Stuart Claytonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13707750452117583297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20433842.post-82900310167466245682009-06-18T11:57:20.933-04:002009-06-18T11:57:20.933-04:00The local cows think I'm the paparazzi. It turns out they was made by one Francis Cavanagh, concerning whom the web has nothing more to say than "student of Henry Moore", though that malevolent figure more resembles the work of Charles Sargent Jagger.chris millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09575033275184403015noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20433842.post-52004027560065050362009-06-09T21:11:23.257-04:002009-06-09T21:11:23.257-04:00You Brits so need to get yourself a Constitution w...You Brits so need to get yourself a Constitution with teeth and judicial independence that means something.
